When Carle's father returned, he wasn't the warm, encouraging paternal figure the then-18-year-old remembered from before the war, but a distant and broken man. His father was drafted into the German army and was captured by the Soviets, and was away from the family for 8 years. World War II cast a bleak pallor of violence and loss over Carle’s childhood. It was 1935-so precisely the wrong time to move back to Europe. But when Carle was 6, his father relocated the family back to his native Stuttgart, Germany. ![]() The Very Hungry Caterpillar's bright colors contrast a dark period in Eric Carle's childhood.Įric Carle was born in Syracuse, New York, on June 25, 1929. The story is set in a world that long ago was turned almost entirely into a deadly desert, leaving the remnants of humanity living in small stone cities built into coastal cliffs. It tells of powerful people competing to find and control artefacts of an ancient technology that they think will give them powers that are almost magical. How did I miss it back in 1995? Well, perhaps I read the publisher’s summary which makes it sound like Indiana Jones meets Alladin, and passed. I found ‘City Of Bones’, released in 1995, two decades before Murderbot, and what a find it turned out to be. The next one won’t be released for another eight month’s so I decided to try out Martha Wells’ back catalogue. I came to ‘City Of Bones’ via the ‘Murderbot Diaries’ I’d read each instalment as came out and enjoyed them all. ![]() 6/29/2023 0 Comments Trick mirror tolentino![]() ![]() After all, it only took about seven years of flogging my own selfhood on the internet to get to a place where I could comfortably afford to stop using Amazon to save fifteen minutes and five dollars at a time”. ![]() One of many forms of widely shared self-delusion she cops to in Trick Mirror is the “fantasy” of non-complicity in a ludicrously unjust global economy, the belief “that I can make it out of here. And her work is marked by that environment – in which you must be swift, bold and flexible, playful but persuasive, willing to perform yourself close-up and ready to be attacked for it, constantly aware of how you’re seen, competing for elusive attention, preparing for immediate counterargument. The story is absolutely nuts, with insanely colorful characters, twists, turns, and at least 60 laugh out loud moments a minute. Well, I guess that’s what happens when our hero is a dork who can tap powers beyond this world and he has to work with or against two rival Cluck-n-Pray gangs, an evil cow, a Green Bay Defensive Tackle, rifle-toting assassins – and a pair of stoners, also addicted to Twitter. Edger by David Beem is like nothing else that I listened to before, and I experienced over 1,200 audiobooks in my life so far! A team lead by MIT scientist/federal agent John Kenner crosses the globe to prevent the terrorists from calving a giant Antarctic iceberg inducing terrible storms and flash floods in the US and, using giant cavitators, causing a Pacific tidal wave. Crichton dramatizes his message by way of a frantic chase to prevent environmental terrorists from wreaking widespread destruction aimed at galvanizing the world against global warming. ![]() If he is wrong, then the novel will be remembered simply as another smart and robust, albeit preachy, addition to an astonishing writing career that has produced, among other works, Jurassic Park, Rising Sun, Disclosure and The Andromeda Strain. If Crichton is right-if the scientific evidence for global warming is thin if the environmental movement, ignoring science, has gone off track if we live in what he in his Author's Message calls a ""State of Fear,"" a ""near-hysterical preoccupation with safety that's at best a waste of resources and a crimp on the human spirit, and at worst an invitation to totalitarianism""-then his extraordinary new thriller may in time be viewed as a landmark publication, both cautionary and prophetic. ![]() |
